Bulldogs bounce Brevard for 4th straight win

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C.-Junior forward Jon Hart netted his first collegiate double-double helping Barton College roll to a convincing 89-55 victory over Brevard College Saturday evening in the 46th annual Mount Olive College Pickle Classic in Kornegay Arena.

The backcourt duo of senior Jaren Haley (Woodbridge, Va.) and junior Gerald Boston (Burlington, N.C.) were both named to the All-Tournament Team as Barton (4-1) won its fourth consecutive contest. Brevard remained winless at 0-5.

Hart, playing in front of his hometown crowd after graduating from Southern Wayne High School just outside Mount Olive, posted career-bests of 15 points and 10 rebounds as a reserve Saturday. Hart added a team-high three steals and made 8-of-10 free throws.

Haley continued his strong play leading Barton in scoring for a fifth straight game with 16 points. Boston filled up the box score with 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Senior Aaron Suggs (Wilson, N.C.) came off the bench to bucket 14 points including a game-high three made trifectas.

Haley hit a pair of three-pointers during a 31-6 run in the first half as Barton broke open close game. After trailing by a point early, the Bulldogs used Haley's second three-pointer followed by three straight field goals by Boston to build a 36-12 lead with 7:39 left.

The margin stay above 20 for the final four minutes of the half and Barton took its biggest lead at 55-24 on sophomore Aaron Coats' (Salemburg, N.C.) three-point play with 1:26 remaining. The Bulldogs led 59-32 at the break.

In the second half, Barton's lead never fell below 25 points and the final score was the largest margin of the game.

The Bulldogs forced Brevard into 27 turnovers with 14 steals as Barton dominated points off turnovers by a 25-2 margin. Barton also won the battle of the backboards for a second straight night with a 36-27 rebounding advantage.

Twelve Bulldogs scored on Saturday six points by junior Keith Manley (Greensboro, N.C.) and five apiece by junior Jarrett Jernigan (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore Evan Shelton (Charlotte, N.C.)

Gaither Hendrix led all scorers for the second straight night with 20 points for the Tornados to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Hendrix had 27 Friday against Mount Olive. Darius Moose added 12 points and six rebounds.

Barton and Brevard were whistled for a combined 50 fouls. Both teams shot 25-for-31 from the free throw line.
