WILSON, N.C.-Barton College sophomore Taylor Parrish (Smithfield, N.C.) scored her team-high 10th goal in a 4-1 Conference Carolinas women's soccer loss to King College on Saturday afternoon during Barton's Homecoming and Senior Day.
The Tornado departed town with a 6-7-1 overall and 5-4-1 league records and the Lady Bulldogs fell to 3-10-1 and 2-8-1 after playing their last home game of the season.
Barton celebrated Senior Day before the game kicked off as the Bulldogs coaching staff honored its senior class of seven including defender Brittany Watson (Greensboro, N.C.), defender Brittany Bobbitt (Manassas, Va.), forward Hilary Peterson (Hampstead, N.C.), forward Ashley Mikulski (Youngsville, N.C.), midfielder Anna Tressler (Mount Airy, Md.), midfielder Mileika Miki (Laurel, Md.) and forward Tiffany Smith (Jacksonville, N.C.).
King held a commanding 25-9 shot cushion and had three of the tilts four corner kicks.
Senior Morgan Shelton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) scored a pair of goals in the first half to help King take a 3-0 advantage at halftime. Shelton started the scoring just six minutes and four seconds into play. Classmate Monica Aguirre (Miami, Fla.) took a corner kick that went off a Barton defender and directly to Shelton on the goal line, who successful stuffed away the one timer.
Senior Heidi Steger (Chattanooga, Tenn.) doubled up the Tornado advantage in the 27th minute. Aguirre fed Steger the ball about seven yards outside the box and Steger ripped an accurate shot into the upper-left twine for her first goal of the season.
Aguirre scored her second goal of the afternoon and 11th of the season in the 35th minute on a breakaway set up by freshman Casey Shanklin (Knoxville, Tenn.).
Barton's best chance of the first half came in the 13th minute when senior Anna Tressler (Mount Airy, Md.) took a one-touch scissor kick from 12-yards out that just was within the upper reaches of Tornado senior goalkeeper Abbey Kitts (Tazewell, Va.).
Junior Devon Shanklin (Knoxville, Tenn.) tacked on the fourth Tornado goal less than three minutes into the second half by tapping in a cross from the left side off the foot of Shelton.
Parrish netted her goal in the 72nd minute after being fouled in King's box by junior Casey Finnell (Chattanooga, Tenn.). Parrish then confidently deposited the ensuing PK into the back of the net with a low shot to the right as Kitts dove in the other direction.
Mikulski looked to score the Bulldogs second goal in the 88th minute on a feed set up by Miki, but the goal was negated by a delayed offside call. All four of Parrish's shots were on goal while Tressler had a pair of attempts on frame.
Freshman netminder Carson Moore (Greenville, N.C.) had eight saves for the Bulldogs. Kitts had six stops in the winning effort for the Tornado.
