Before coming to Christopher Newport, Mariani spent ten seasons on the staff at Campbell University, where he also served as Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach.  While holding many titles during his Campbell career, Mariani was handed the reigns as the play-caller in 2013.  During the 2013 season, the offense increased itss scoring from 14 points per game the previous year to 29 points per contest, while also breaking 29 individual and team records.  In 2013, he helped produce the Camels’ first All-American in Running Back Kurt Odom, along with the their first 1,000-yard running back (DeShawn Jones) in 2015 and first 1,000-yard wide receiver (Aaron Blockmon) in 2016.

Mariani’s resume also includes time as an assistant at Coastal Carolina (2005-2007) and his alma mater, North Carolina (2004-2005). At Coastal Carolina, the program posted back-to-back conference championships and advanced to the 2006 FCS playoffs.

As a student-athlete at UNC, Mariani played four seasons as a quarterback and signal caller.  He was a member of the Peach Bowl Championship squad in 2001 with the Tar Heels.
