NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Barton baseball team (1-2) split a doubleheader with Newberry (3-3) Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex. The Wolves won by a score of 10-5 in the first contest while the Bulldogs took the night cap, 9-8.
The victory in the second game was the first under new mentor
Matt Padgett for the Bulldogs.
Game One – Newberry 10, Barton 5
The Wolves' Nick Foster (Hartsville, S.C.) hit a two-run home run and finished with three runs batted as Newberry rallied from a 4-0 deficit after two-and-a-half innings of play to take the win.
Newberry's Logan Busenlehner (West Columbia, S.C.) added a solo home run and two RBI while Nick Riedel (Tampa, Fla.) earned the win in relief after allowing just one run over five innings of work to go along with six strikeouts.
For Barton, junior outfielder
J.J. Faulkner (Wilmington, N.C.) hit a three-run home run but
Braeden Rodgers (Advance, N.C.) was tagged with the loss.
Game Two – Barton 9, Newberry 8
Barton sophomore outfielder
Vincent Santostefano (Chapin, S.C.) drove in three runs while sophomore shortstop
Tyler Hughesman (Mooresville, N.C.) broke an eight-all tie with the game-winning sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning to help the Bulldogs salvage the split.
Barton freshman
Joshua Wolkin (Atlanta, Ga.) (1-0) retired the final four batters to earn the victory.
Newberry's Cayden Hansen (Wilmar, Minn.) fell to 0-1 after taking the setback in relief.
Barton hosts Catawba in its 2026 home opener on Tuesday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m. Newberry, meanwhile, travels to Tigerville, S.C., to take on North Greenville on Wednesday afternoon starting at 3:30 p.m.
