JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Barton softball team (6-6) suffered a doubleheader setback to Carson-Newman (13-1) Sunday afternoon at The Vick by scores of 11-0 and 7-6.
Game One – Carson-Newman 11, Barton 0 (five innings)
The Eagles' McCauley Bailey (Cross Plains, Tenn.) hit a three-run home run in the first inning and finished with five runs batted in and Carson-Newman used a seven-run fourth frame to run-rule the Bulldogs.
Carson-Newman's Katey Mathena (Blacksburg, Va.) added a bases-clear double in the fourth inning while Lorelei Spradlin (Blacksburg, Va.) (2-0) threw a three-hit shutout while striking out five batters.
Barton sophomore
Emily Bobo (Mount Ephraim, N.J.) (2-4) suffered the setback.
Game Two – Carson-Newman 7, Barton 6
The Eagles' Addie Saunders (Radford, Va.) hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning as Carson-Newman held off a late Barton rally and completed the sweep.
Barton senior second baseman
Madison Mercer (Wilson, N.C.) finished with two hits and two runs batted in as the visitors rallied from a 6-2 deficit to tie the score in the seventh inning before the Eagles' heroics in the bottom of half of the frame.
Carson-Newman's Kaliah Merritt (Wayne, W.Va.) (1-0) was credited with the win while freshman
Erica Sturgill (Williamston, N.C.) (0-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs. Barton senior outfielder
Alexis Bicondova (Ephrata, Wash.) added three hits and an RBI despite the setback as well.
Barton hosts Lenoir-Rhyne for a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m., at Jeffries Field while Carson-Newman travels to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on Converse in a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 2:00 p.m.
