WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (17-8, 13-4) made it six wins in a row with a 66-58 triumph over Shorter (13-11, 11-6), 66-58, Monday evening at Wilson Gymnasium in a Conference Carolinas contest.
Barton sophomore guard
Layne Sleight (Jackson, Mich.) led all scorers with 24 points as the Bulldogs raced to a 22-6 lead and held on to beat the Hawks. Sleight also hit four of the team's seven three-pointers in the victory.
Barton senior guard
Lauren Mingo (Clinton, Md.) and sophomore guard
Leah Hampton (Richmond, Va.) both scored 10 points as well as the Bulldogs held a 39-27 advantage in rebounding and the home team picked up a key conference victory.
Shorter's Chelsy Singleton (Cypress, Texas) led the visitors with 19 points and Amiya Redus (Tanner, Ala.) added 16 points in the losing effort.
The Hawks held a 47-46 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining courtesy of a three-point play from Redus but the Bulldogs responded with 11 straight points to take control of the contest.
Barton remains at home to host Chowan in a league game on Wednesday night starting at 5:00 p.m., while Shorter hosts Converse Wednesday in league action beginning at 5:30 p.m.
