BELMONT, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (16-8, 12-4) ran its winning streak to five games with a 59-50 triumph over Belmont Abbey (17-6, 12-4) Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler Center in a key Conference Carolinas contest.
Barton sophomore guards
Layne Sleight (Jackson, Mich.) and
Celeste Bailey (Virginia Beach, Va.) both scored 15 points while Sleight added 10 rebounds for a double-double in the victory.
The Bulldogs overcame a 31-27 halftime deficit and held the Crusaders to just 28 percent shooting (17-of-60) for the contest.
Belmont Abbey's Riley James (Davidsonville, Md.) scored a team-high 13 points in the losing effort.
Barton junior guard
Cyntiah Braden (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished with 12 points as well as four Bulldogs reached double figures and the visitors totaled 11 steals in the triumph.
Barton returns home to take on Shorter on Monday in a conference make-up contest at Wilson Gymnasium beginning at 5:00 p.m.
Belmont Abbey, meanwhile, hosts Erskine Monday night in a league affair starting at 5:00 p.m.
