WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (5-3) won twice on the final day of the Bulldog Round Robin Invite Saturday afternoon at Jeffries Field, beating both West Chester (0-4), 3-2, and Fairmont State (3-1), 4-2.
Barton 3, West Chester 2 (eight innings)
The Bulldogs defeated the Golden Rams by the exact same score over the exact same innings of play for the second game in a row.
Barton senior third baseman
Destany Blake (Alliance, Ohio) drove in the game-winning run with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning – scoring freshman catcher
McKenzie Holloway (Montpelier, Va.) – for the walk-off victory.
Barton sophomore
Emily Bobo (Mount Ephraim, N.J.) (1-2) earned her first victory of the year after allowing just two runs while striking out seven batters in going the distance.
For West Chester, Mairead Hopkins (West Chester, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs but Danielle Ciliberto (Ambler, Pa.) (0-3) took the setback.
Barton 4, Fairmont State 2
Barton won its third straight game behind senior second baseman
Madison Mercer (Wilson, N.C.), who drove in three runs highlighted by a two-run triple in the first frame.
Barton freshman
Chaleigh Currin (Stem, N.C.) (1-0) struck out six batters over five innings of work to earn the win while freshman
Haley Inman (Stokesdale, N.C.) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the save.
Fairmont State's Caitlin Morey (Huntingtown, Md.) (0-1) took the loss. Paige Matteson (Wellsburg, W.Va.) drove in both runs to lead the visitors offensively.
In the first game of the day, Fairmont State run-ruled West Chester by a 9-0 score in five innings.
Barton hits the road to take on Tusculum on Saturday, February 21, in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m., in Greeneville, Tenn.
