Barton baseball outscores Virginia State, 24-14, in mid-week home contest

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (23-14) scored its most runs in over four years with a 24-14 victory over Virginia State (4-14) Tuesday afternoon at Nixon Field.

The Bulldogs used a 10-run second inning to take control and rally from a 6-0 deficit after the first-half inning of play to sweep the season series from Virginia State.

Barton freshman catcher Jackson Marvel (Johns Creek, Ga.) drove in four runs while senior shortstop Luis Sauri (Buena, N.J.) added four hits and three RBI as the Bulldogs scored their most runs in a contest since a 25-6 victory over Virginia State on March 9, 2021.

Barton freshman Brandon Arthur (Belhaven, N.C.) (1-0) earned the victory in relief as six players tallied two or more hits for the Bulldogs in the win.

For Virginia State, Marquis Smith (Dinwiddie, Va.) had a bases-clearing double in the first frame and Thomas Ealey (Fort Mill, S.C.) also drove in three runs despite the loss.  The Trojans' Preston Branzelle (Chester, Va.) (2-3) was tagged with the loss.

Barton steps back into Conference Carolinas play when the Bulldogs host Erskine on Friday beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Virginia State hosts Lighthouse Christian College on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
