MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (13-7, 7-2) won over Chowan (1-12, 0-6), 13-4, Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field to complete the Conference Carolinas weekend series sweep.
Barton junior third baseman
Yariel Diaz (Fort Myers, Fla.) hit a two-run home run – his fourth straight contest hitting a round-tripper – and drove in four runs as the Bulldogs pushed their winning streak to six games.
Barton freshman first baseman
Jacob Bates (Pinehurst, N.C.) added a two-run home run as the Bulldogs broke a one-all tie by plating six straight runs to take control of the contest.
Barton senior
Matthew Rivers (Kernersville, N.C.) (1-1) earned his first victory of the season after allowing just three runs over six innings of work to go along with three strikeouts.
For Chowan, Ryan Bellamy (Cape Carteret, N.C.) led the home team with a two-run home run as well but the Hawks' Josh Wise (Elizabeth City, N.C.) (1-2) was tagged with the loss while Chowan suffered its 11th straight setback.
Barton returns home to take on Saginaw Valley State on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., at Nixon Field while Chowan travels to Central, S.C., to take on Southern Wesleyan in a league contest Friday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
