Barton women’s basketball pushes Shorter to overtime but falls on the road, 76-73

ROME, Ga. – The Barton women's basketball team (11-15, 7-11) took one of the top teams in Conference Carolinas to overtime but eventually fell by a 76-73 score to Shorter (19-5, 14-4) Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop-King Centre.

The Hawks' Derrica McCall (Haynesville, Ala.) scored a team-high 26 points as the home team remained at the top of the league's Southwest Division standings.

Shorter's Amya Patterson (Orlando, Fla.) hit the game-winning three-pointer 55 seconds into overtime to break a 67-67 tie.  Patterson finished with nine points and three treys in the triumph.

Barton graduate student guard Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) also scored 26 points and hit the game-tying three-pointer with 11 seconds left to force overtime at 65-all.  Walker also remained sixth on the Bulldogs' all-time scoring list with 1,814 points.

Barton freshman guard Leah Hampton (Richmond, Va.) added 24 points in addition to seven three-pointers off the bench as the Bulldogs rallied from an eight-point deficit – 59-51 with 6:09 remaining in the fourth quarter – to push the contest to an extra period.

Both teams have a make-up league contest on Monday evening.  Barton travels to Mount Olive, N.C., to take on rival Mount Olive beginning at 5:00 p.m., while Shorter hosts Francis Marion starting at 5:30 p.m.
