WILSON, N.C. – The Barton field hockey team (0-8, 0-5) scored its first goal in program history and battled hard but fell in a close contest to Coker (2-7, 2-4), 4-3, Friday evening in a South Atlantic Conference match at Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium.
The Bulldogs' historic goal came with 2:16 remaining before halftime courtesy of junior midfielder Kyomi Nettles (Oceanside, Calif.).
Barton freshman midfielders
Brynn Gill (Prince George, Va.) and
Piper Wojcik (Wilton, Maine) also found the back of the net while senior midfielder
Candice Wainschel (Chico, Calif.) tallied a pair of assists in the setback.
Four players scored for the Cobras including the match-winner from Amelia DiBattista (Peabody, Mass.) in the 19th minute to open the scoring.
Coker held a 14-5 edge in shots taken while Eve Sekscinski (Lincoln, Del.) earned the victory after playing the first half and stopping a pair of shots. Barton junior goalkeeper
Gracyn Arruda (Richmond, Va.) make three saves but suffered the loss.
Barton hits the road to take on Lander in Greenwood, S.C., on Tuesday starting at 7:00 p.m., while Coker hosts Lincoln Memorial on Monday, October at 6:00 p.m.
