RALEIGH, N.C. – The Barton women's volleyball team (0-2) opened the 2024 campaign on Friday in the Shaw Invitational with a pair of 3-0 setbacks to Catawba and Shaw at the C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Catawba 3, Barton 0
The Indians downed the Bulldogs by scores of 26-24, 27-25 and 25-21 in the season opener.
Catawba was led by Kelcie Love (Mount Ulla, N.C.) with 10 kills while Syndey McCutcheon (Jefferson, Ga.) added 11 assists as the Indians hit .300 in the victory.
Barton was led by senior outside hitter
Henly Sleight (Jackson, Mich.) with a match-high 12 kills, six digs and four service aces in the losing effort. Senior setter
Hailey Strey (Cape Coral, Fla.) totaled 14 assists for the Bulldogs, who suffered 10 service errors for the contest.
Shaw 3, Barton 0
The host Bears pulled out a straight set victory over the Bulldogs by scores of 25-21, 25-10 and 25-17.
Shaw was spearheaded by Talia Emmen (Florence, S.C.) with a double-double – 10 kills and 13 digs – as the home team hit .302 for the match.
Barton senior outside hitter
Lauryn Pitt (Greenville, N.C.) had a half-dozen kills and senior setter
Isabella Ream (York, Pa.) finished with six assists and four digs as the Bulldogs hit just .089 for the match in the setback.
Barton tries to bounce back next Friday, September 13, against Elizabeth City State (9:00 a.m.) and Central State (5:00 p.m.) at the Charleston Invitational in Charleston, S.C.
