MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (10-19) upended Chowan (13-10), 70-61, in the second round of the 2024 Atlantic Casualty Conference Carolinas Championship Sunday in the Hawks Athletic Center.
The Bulldogs, the fifth seed in the league tournament championship, will move onto the quarterfinals and will face fifth-seeded Emmanuel (17-10) on Friday at 6:00 p.m., at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on the campus of Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. The Hawks were seeded fourth in the championship.
Barton, winners of three straight games, was led by senior guard
Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) with a game-high 23 points to go along with five treys as the Bulldogs saw an 16-point lead – 39-23 with 56 seconds remaining in the first half – evaporate before eventually overtaking the Hawks for the victory.
Trailing by a 54-52 score with just over five minutes remaining in the game, Barton put together an 11-0 run to put the contest out of reach. Sophomore guard
Lauren Mingo (Clinton, Md.) added 19 points for the Bulldogs, who beat the Hawks for the second time this year.
Chowan put four players in double figures – led by Tynasia Bunting (Newport News, Va.) with 18 points – despite the loss. The Hawks shot just 36 percent (26-of-72) from the field and were forced into 21 turnovers in the setback.
