DUE WEST, S.C. – The Barton softball team (12-12, 3-1) split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with Erskine (4-18, 1-3) Saturday afternoon at the Flying Fleet complex. The Bulldogs won the first contest by a 14-2 score before the Flying Fleet prevailed in the nightcap, 6-5.
Game One – Barton 14, Erskine 2
Barton junior designated player
Gracelyn Massey (Princeton, N.C.) hit two home runs and drove in seven runs as the Bulldogs won easily over the Flying Fleet.
Massey hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and added a three-run round-tripper in the seventh frame while sophomore shortstop
MacKenzie Taylor (Mebane, N.C.) added three RBI in the win for the Bulldogs. Barton senior
Miranda Holmes (Godwin, N.C.) improved to 9-4 on the season after striking out 12 batters in the complete game victory.
For Erskine, Gabby Burroughs (Greenville, S.C.) hit a two-run home run but Kaley Ingle (Stoneville, N.C.) fell to 2-8 after suffering the loss.
Game Two – Erskine 6, Barton 5
Burroughs walked off the game with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning.
Massey and graduate student third baseman
Shelby Shepherd (Colorado Springs, Colo.) hit round-trippers for the Bulldogs, who rallied from a 5-2 deficit after five innings of play to tie the score.
Erskine's Payton Cox (Goose Creek, N.C.) (1-4) earned the complete game win while Holmes (9-5) was tagged with the loss.
Barton returns home to take on Mount Olive in a league doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Erskine travels to Central, S.C., to take on Southern Wesleyan in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
