MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Barton softball team (11-11, 2-0) opened Conference Carolinas play with a doubleheader sweep of Chowan (4-13, 0-2), 2-0 and 8-6, Wednesday afternoon at Hawks Field.
Game One – Barton 2, Chowan 0

Miranda Holmes (Godwin, N.C.) (8-4) threw a two-hit shutout and set a school single-game record with 19 strikeouts in leading the Bulldogs to the win.

Sydney Wade (Farmville, N.C.) hit a solo home run and junior shortstop
Mary Lindsey Harris (Robersonville, N.C.) added an RBI double to lead the Bulldogs offensively. Chowan's Alex Bishop (Metamora, Ill.) (2-5) was tagged with the loss.
Game Two – Barton 8, Chowan 6
Harris hit a two-run home run while senior outfielder
Kandyce Condrey (High Point, N.C.) added three hits and two runs batted in as the Bulldogs held off the Hawks and completed the sweep.
Barton freshman
Ali Bunch (Wilmington, N.C.) (1-2) earned the win in relief while Holmes pitched the final three innings and struck out six batters to register her first save of the season.
For Chowan, Haleigh Reid (Colonial Heights, Va.) hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs despite the loss. The Hawks' Haileigh Boone (Anson, N.C.) (1-5) was tagged with the setback.
Barton remains on the road to take on Erskine in a league doubleheader on Saturday beginning at Noon in Due West, S.C., while Chowan hosts Francis Marion on Saturday at Noon in a doubleheader as well.
