WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (1-5) fell twice to Augusta (5-2), 6-5 and 5-3, Friday afternoon in a regional doubleheader at Jeffries Field.
Game One – Augusta 6, Barton 5
The Jaguars' Lauren Barrett (Jefferson, Ga.) finished with three hits and a pair of RBI as Augusta was able to hold off a late rally by the Bulldogs to take the win.
Barton scored a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh frames to cut the margin to one but the Jaguars' Madalyn Spinks (Social Circle, Ga.) struck out the final batter with a runner on to earn the save.
Barton was led by junior designated player
Gracelyn Massey (Princeton, N.C.) with three hits and an RBI while senior
Miranda Holmes (Midway, N.C.) (1-2) suffered the loss.
The Jaguars' Alissa Bolinger (Palmetto, Ga.) improved to 2-1 with the win.
Game Two – Augusta 5, Barton 3
Augusta's Lauren Evens (Auburn, Ga.) hit a two-run double as part of a four-run third frame as the Jaguars completed the sweep of the Bulldogs.
Barton was led by sophomore second baseman
Macie Matney (Fayetteville, N.C.) with two hits and two runs batted in but freshman
Kerrigan Wonder (Omaha, Neb.) took the loss.
Augusta's Hannah Turner (Kennesaw, Ga.) (2-0) was tagged with the win after going the distance.
Barton hosts West Virginia Tech on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., in a doubleheader while Augusta takes on Chowan in a doubleheader at Noon on Saturday in Murfreesboro, N.C.
