Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Barton women’s basketball suffers first loss of the year, 56-49 to Augusta

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (1-1) suffered its first setback of the season, 56-49 to Augusta (2-0) Saturday evening at Hayes Gymnasium on the campus of North Greenville University on the second day of the Southeast Region Conference Challenge.

The Jaguars' Mone Florence (Fort Walton Beach, Fla.) scored a team-high 14 points as Augusta broke out of the gate by scoring the game's first 20 points and holding off a furious rally by the Bulldogs to stay unbeaten on the season.

Barton senior guard Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) finished with a game-high 18 points and junior guard Lauren Mingo (Clinton, Md.) added a double-double – 14 points and 10 rebounds – and hit a pair of field goals to cut the advantage to one point twice – 48-47 and 50-49 – in the fourth quarter but Augusta stayed ahead the rest of the way.

Augusta's last six points came from the charity stripe and the Jaguars connected on 13-of-25 free throw attempts – compared to the Bulldogs' one attempt – in the victory.

Augusta held a 45-34 advantage on the boards while Autumn Phillips (Fairburn, Ga.) also reached double figures in the contest, totaling 10 points.

Barton hosts Virginia Union in its home opener on Wednesday night at Wilson Gymnasium beginning at 5:00 p.m., while Augusta hosts Newberry Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
