JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Barton football team (2-3, 1-2) fell to No. 21 Carson-Newman (5-0, 3-0), 28-17, Saturday afternoon at Burke-Tarr Stadium.
Carson-Newman's Jayden Sullins (Cullman, Ala.) rushed for a game-high 261 yards on 31 carries while Jeremiah Carroll (Atlanta, Ga.) scored on a 64-yard touchdown run on a reverse on the first offensive play of the contest as the Eagles continued their best start since the 2007 season and remained unbeaten on the year.
The Eagles finished with 450 yards on the ground and their defense registered three quarterback sacks on the day in the victory.

Khavarie Hightower (Burlington, N.C.) returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown while junior linebacker
Matthew Leach (Raeford, N.C.) added an 80-yard fumble return for a score in the second stanza in the losing effort.

Dereck Barringer (Rockingham, N.C.), the reigning league defensive player of the week, led all tackles with 16 on the afternoon.
Barton remains on the road to take on Wingate on Saturday, October 12, at 6:00 p.m., in its first SAC Piedmont Division game of the year while Carson-Newman takes on Mars Hill next Saturday in Mars Hill, N.C., beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Lions and Eagles will be playing in their initial Mountain Division contests as well.
