Barton football holds on to beat UVA Wise, 28-24, to stay unblemished on the season

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton football team (3-0, 1-0) opened South Atlantic Conference play with a thrilling, 28-24 victory over UVA Wise (1-2, 0-1) Saturday afternoon at Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium.

Barton junior All-American running back Jordan Terrell (Ramseur, N.C.) ran for a game-high 256 yards and two touchdowns including the game-winning 63-yard score with 3:27 left as the Bulldogs were able to prevail despite squandering a 21-0 lead early in the third quarter.  Terrell is averaging 194.0 yards per game on the ground so far this year.

UVA Wise – which scored 24 straight points in the second half to take a three-point lead – was stopped on downs with two seconds to go at the Barton five-yard line.  The Cavaliers took a 24-21 advantage on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Jake Corkren (Northport, Ala.) to Dorien Goddard (Greeneville, Tenn.) with just under four minutes remaining.

Goddard finished with 128 yards receiving on eight catches but the lead was short-lived as Terrell crossed the goal line on the next offensive play.  Cockren passed for 190 yards while Jaevon Gillespie (Greeneville, Tenn.) led UVA Wise's ground game with 125 yards on 18 carries and a 52-yard touchdown run.  UVA Wise held a 440-403 advantage in total yards despite the loss.

Barton junior wide receiver Kameron Johnson (Rocky Mount, N.C.) caught a 69-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring late in the first quarter and junior linebacker Shane Perry (Holly Springs, N.C.) and junior defensive back Dereck Barringer (Rockingham, N.C.) led the Bulldogs on defense with 11 takedowns.

Barton hits the road and travels to Mars Hill, N.C., to take on Mars Hill next Saturday, September 23, beginning at 1:00 p.m., in a conference game while UVA Wise hosts Limestone on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., in a league contest.
