WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (20-20, 11-9) split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with Lees-McRae (26-14, 13-5) Sunday afternoon at Jeffries Field. The Bulldogs won the first contest by a 3-1 score while the Bobcats doubled up Barton in the second game, 16-8.
Game One – Barton 3, Lees-McRae 1
Barton junior
Miranda Holmes (Godwin, N.C.) (5-7) earned the complete game victory after allowing just one run to go along with seven strikeouts.
Barton senior third baseman
Lindsey Massengill (Pine Level, N.C.) hit the game-winning RBI double in the third frame while a pair of Bobcats' errors led to two unearned runs for the home team.
For Lees-McRae, Emma Jackson (Lexington, N.C.) hit a solo home run while Megan Powell (Eden, N.C.) fell to 12-5 on the season after suffering the loss.
Game Two – Lees-McRae 16, Barton 8
The Bobcats broke open what became a close contest with a six-run seventh inning highlighted by three home runs in the frame courtesy of Jackson, Lauren Ritchie (China Grove, N.C.) and Jordyn Scott (Smithfield, N.C.).
Jackson finished with three runs batted in while Jada Wilson (Valle Crucis, N.C.) improved to 12-6 after earning the victory.
Barton was led by senior first baseman
Sloane Correa (Greenville, N.C.), who totaled three hits and three runs batted in for the Bulldogs despite the setback. Senior
Rilee Jones (Norfolk, Va.) (6-5) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs.
Barton hosts North Carolina Wesleyan for Senior Day on Tuesday beginning at 4:30 p.m., while Lees-McRae takes on King on Tuesday in a league doubleheader in Bristol, Tenn., starting at 2:00 p.m.
