WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (14-16, 5-5) swept a Conference Carolinas doubleheader from UNC Pembroke (10-21, 3-5), 11-3 and 10-9, Tuesday afternoon at Jeffries Field.
Game One – Barton 11, UNC Pembroke 3 (six innings)
The Bulldogs broke a three-all tie with a seven-run fifth frame while senior third baseman
Lindsey Massengill (Pine Level, N.C.) ended the game with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Barton run-ruled UNC Pembroke.
Massengill finished with three runs batted in while sophomore designated player
Gracelyn Massey (Princeton, N.C.) tallied four RBI in the win. Senior
Rilee Jones (Norfolk, Va.) (3-4) earned the victory in relief for the Bulldogs after allowing just one run over the final three innings of work to go along with seven strikeouts.
The Braves' Lauren Hilbourn (Chadbourn, N.C.) finished with a pair of hits and a run-scoring triple while UNC Pembroke's Madison Dyson (Statesville, N.C.) (4-11) suffered the loss.
Game Two – Barton 10, UNC Pembroke 9
Massengill added two more hits and two more RBI as the Bulldogs rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the first inning and were able to hold off a late Braves' rally to complete the sweep.
UNC Pembroke's Olivia Hall (Liberty, N.C.) hit a three-run home run in the first frame while Hilbourn added a two-run round-tripper in the top of the seventh inning to cut the margin to 10-9 but Jones was able to record the final out on a pop up to the pitcher for the victory.
Jones (4-4) earned the win in the second contest as well after throwing the final five innings and striking out six batters. Barton senior first baseman
Sloane Correa (Greenville, N.C.) broke a four-all tie with the game-winning RBI single in the second inning. Sloane also tallied two hits and two RBI while UNC Pembroke's Abby White (Midlothian, Va.) (2-2) took the loss.
Barton next travels to Murfreesboro, N.C., to take on Chowan in a league doubleheader Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., while UNC Pembroke hosts North Greenville in a doubleheader Friday at 1:00 p.m.
