Barton baseball wins easily over Catawba, 19-6, in mid-week road contest

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (15-10) scored early and often in an easy 19-6 victory over Catawba (18-11) Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park.

A trio of Barton players hit home runs – sophomore catcher Chase Waddell (Lucama, N.C.), senior shortstop Ryan McIsaac (Millville, N.J.) and junior outfielder Carelle Gonzalez (Bridgeton, N.J.) – as the Bulldogs rolled to a 17-0 lead after four innings of play on their way to the dominant victory.

The early scoring onslaught included a 10-run third frame as the Bulldogs improved to 12-1 in their last 13 contests.  Waddell finished with four hits and five runs batted in while McIsaac added four RBI in the triumph.

On the mound, sophomore Jacob Shapley (Sewell, N.J.) (2-2) earned the victory after throwing five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out three batters for the Bulldogs.  Catawba's Casey Gouge (Salisbury, N.C.) fell to 1-3 after suffering the loss.  The Indians' Dylan Drive (Faith, N.C.) drove in a pair of runs in the losing effort for the home team.

Barton remains on the road to take on Limestone in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Catawba takes on No. 18 Wingate in Wingate, N.C., on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
