WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (9-9) split a home doubleheader with West Chester (8-7) Wednesday afternoon at Jeffries Field. The Golden Rams prevailed in the first contest, 4-1, while the Bulldogs salvaged the split with a 6-2 triumph in the nightcap.
Game One – West Chester 4, Barton 1
The Golden Rams took advantage of several Bulldogs errors and scored a pair of unearned runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to take the win.
West Chester's Grace Aquilar (Frederica, Del.) finished with a pair of hits and an RBI while Makenzie Edwards (Atco, N.J.) (2-3) earned the win after allowing just one unearned run after pitching into the sixth inning. The Golden Rams' Danielle Ciliberto (Fr. Ambler, Pa.) was credited with the save.
For Barton, senior
Rilee Jones (Norfolk, Va.) (2-3) suffered the loss despite going the distance and allowing four unearned runs. Barton senior third baseman
Lindsey Massengill (Pine Level, N.C.) drove in a run in the setback.
Game Two – Barton 6, West Chester 2
Barton senior first baseman
Sloane Correa (Greenville, N.C.) hit a two-run home run while Massengill drove in two more runs in a three-run first frame as the Bulldogs salvaged the split.
Barton sophomore
Kierstin Cooper (Nashville, N.C.) earned the complete game victory for the home team. Cooper improved to 3-1 after scattering seven hits and four strikeouts.
For West Chester, Hailey Melvin (Tabernacle, N.J.) hit an RBI double while Samantha Klug (East Norriton, Pa.) (3-1) suffered the loss. Barton senior second baseman
Emily Bell (Bunn, N.C.) finished with a pair of hits and two RBI as the Bulldogs stayed at .500 on the year.
Barton returns to Conference Carolinas play on Friday beginning at 2:00 p.m., in a doubleheader against Emmanuel (Ga.) at home while West Chester hosts the College of Staten Island in a doubleheader Saturday at Noon.
