WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (10-10, 1-1) split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with Emmanuel (12-12, 1-1) Friday afternoon at Jeffries Field. The Lions shut out the Bulldogs, 4-0, in the first game while the Bulldogs salvaged the split with a 13-8 victory in the nightcap.
Game One – Emmanuel 4, Barton 0
The Lions' Maddie Edwards (Lakeland, Fla.) improved to 7-2 on the season after throwing a three-hit shutout to go along with seven strikeouts in the victory. On offense, Lexi Jordan (Comer, Ga.) led the way with a three-for-three performance and an RBI.
Barton sophomore
Kierstin Cooper (Nashville, N.C.) fell to 3-2 on the season after suffering the loss for the home team.
Game Two – Barton 13, Emmanuel 8 (six innings)
The Bulldogs' bats woke up in the second game highlighted by a seven-run third inning as Barton erased a 4-2 deficit to earn the split. The game was called after six innings due to darkness.
Barton senior outfielder
Savannah Branch (Shallotte, N.C.) and senior third baseman
Lindsey Massengill (Pine Level, N.C.) both finished with three hits and a pair of runs batted in to lead the Bulldogs. Barton finished with 17 hits in the contest.
Emmanuel's Alyssa Adams (Orange Park, Fla.) hit a solo home run and drove in two runs while Macey Kelley (Tallahassee, Fla.) (3-5) was tagged with the loss.
For Barton, sophomore
Gracelyn Massey (Princeton, N.C.) (1-0) earned the win in relief and junior
Miranda Holmes (Midway, N.C.) was credited with the save, her second of the year.
Barton remains at home to take on Erskine in a league doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Emmanuel takes on Chowan on Saturday in a doubleheader starting at Noon in Murfreesboro, N.C.
