MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Barton men's basketball team (16-11, 14-6) fell to Chowan (14-11, 12-8), 92-85, Wednesday evening in the Conference Carolinas regular season finale at the Hawks Athletic Center.
The Hawks were led by Daylan Askew (Ahoskie, N.C.) with a team-high 18 points and was one of five players to score in double figures for the home team, who avenged an earlier regular season loss to the Bulldogs.
Barton was paced by junior guard
Donaven Hairston (Atlanta, Ga.), the league and national player of the week, with a game-high 22 points while sophomore guard
Marcus Boykin (Clinton, N.C.) added 15 points but the Bulldogs hit just three-of-18 points (17 percent) from behind the three-point line.
Chowan jumped out to a 43-35 lead at intermission and pushed its advantage to as many as 20 points – 85-65 and 87-67 – late in the second half in winning its second straight contest. The Hawks held a 47-36 advantage on the boards and blocked nine shots in the win as well.
Barton is the third seed in the 2023 Conference Carolinas Championship and will advance all the way to the quarterfinals to play on Friday, March 3, at 8:30 p.m., at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on the campus of Wofford College. Chowan is the fifth seed and will host the winner of No. 8 Mount Olive (11-17, 9-11) and No. 9 Lees-McRae (13-15, 9-11) on Monday beginning at 7:00 p.m.
