Barton women’s basketball takes down rival Mount Olive, 71-65, for second straight victory

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (6-14, 6-7) made it two victories in a row with a 71-65 triumph over Mount Olive (11-12, 7-8) Wednesday evening in a Conference Carolinas match at Kornegay Arena.

Barton junior guard Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) led all scorers with 29 points while freshman forward Nyah Wilkins (Garner, N.C.) added a double-double – 10 points and 13 rebounds – as the Bulldogs avenged an earlier loss to Mount Olive.

The Trojans were led by Laila Anderson (Burlington, N.C.) with a team-high 25 points but the home team fell for the fourth time in the last five contests.

The final stanza proved to be the deciding factor as the Bulldogs outscored the Trojans by a 22-10 margin in the fourth period.  Walker hit the game-winning field goal with 1:56 remaining in the contest for a 64-63 advantage while the Bulldogs were dominant on the boards, holding a 39-24 rebounding edge.

Barton freshman forward Lauren Mingo (Clinton, Md.) added 14 points off the bench as the visitors also forced the Trojans into 21 turnovers for the contest.

Barton remains on the road to take on Lees-McRae in league action Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m., in Banner Elk, N.C., while Mount Olive hosts King on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
