Barton women’s basketball succumbs to Virginia State Wednesday night at home

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (0-8) fell to an unbeaten Virginia State (7-0) squad by a 75-56 score on Wednesday evening at Wilson Gymnasium.

The Trojans' Tiyanna James (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished with a team-high 19 points and hit three treys as Virginia State jumped out to a 21-7 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back in the victory.

Virginia State's Amesha Miller (Suffolk, Va.) added 16 points off the bench and added 10 rebounds for a double-double as the visitors held a 54-41 advantage on the boards and limited the Bulldogs to just 31 percent (22-of-70) shooting in the victory.

Barton was led by sophomore forward Lauren Mingo (Clinton, Md.) with 19 points while senior guard Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) added 11 points and became the newest member of the school's 1,000-point club in the setback.

Barton also shot just two-of-18 (11 percent) from the three-point line and continues to search for its first win of the year.

Barton hits the road and steps back into Conference Carolinas play on Saturday, December 16, when the Bulldogs travel to Due West, S.C., to take on Erskine beginning at 2:00 p.m., while Virginia State hosts Shaw in a CIAA contest on Monday, December 11, at 5:30 p.m.
