Barton women’s basketball takes 71-62 road victory over Virginia Union on Saturday afternoon

RICHMOND, Va. – The Barton women's basketball team (2-9) picked up a 71-62 road win over Virginia Union (10-3) Saturday afternoon at Barco-Stevens Hall.

The Bulldogs were led by freshman center Nyla Powell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) with a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds while sophomore guard Lauren Mingo (Clinton, Md.) added 17 points in the victory.  Barton was also powered by its performance at the charity stripe, hitting 22-of-33 free throws in the triumph.

Virginia Union was paced by Camary Harris (Suffolk, Va.) with 13 points but the Lady Panthers saw their three-game winning streak snapped.  Virginia Union was also hurt by 16 turnovers in the contest.

Barton rallied from a 10-point deficit – 23-13 with 8:53 left before intermission – in the second quarter before closing the half by scoring 21 of the next 27 points for a 34-29 advantage at the break and never trailed again.  Barton sophomore forward Erial Owens (Powder Springs, Ga.) added 12 points off the bench.

Barton returns home to take on Chowan in its Conference Carolinas opener on Wednesday, January 3, at 5:00 p.m., at Wilson Gymnasium while Virginia Union travels to Raleigh, N.C., to face Saint Augustine's on Thursday, January 4, starting at 5:30 p.m.
