Barton men’s basketball opens league play with resounding road win over Belmont Abbey, 83-62

BELMONT, N.C. – The Barton men's basketball team (3-5, 1-0) began Conference Carolinas play with an 83-62 victory over Belmont Abbey (1-6, 0-1) Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler Center.

Barton senior guard Reese McDonald (Raleigh, N.C.) and senior forward Trevon Spencer (Columbia, N.C.) both scored a team-high 15 points while Spencer blocked two shots to become the school's all-time leading shot blocker (158) as the Bulldogs won their second straight game.

Senior guard Donaven Hairston (Atlanta, Ga.) added 14 points to become the newest member of the school's 1,000-point club as the Bulldogs shot 50 percent (35-of-70) and hit 10 treys in the win.

Belmont Abbey's Mason Taylor (Grandview, Mo.) led the home team with 14 points but the Crusaders dropped their fifth straight contest.

The Crusaders lost despite shooting 23 free throws as compared to the Bulldogs' three attempts but made only 11 from the line.  Barton senior forward Jarrian Hancock (Sanford, N.C.) tallied a dozen points while freshman guard Sean Quick-Streeter (Columbia, S.C.) notched a double-double – 10 points and 11 rebounds – as the visitors put five players in double figures.

Barton does not play again until Thursday, December 14, when the Bulldogs return home to face Lander at Wilson Gymnasium beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Belmont Abbey hosts Anderson next Saturday, December 9, beginning at Noon.
