WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's volleyball team (9-17, 5-12) fell in five sets to Francis Marion (15-15, 11-6), 3-2, Monday evening on Senior Night in a Conference Carolinas match at Wilson Gymnasium.
The Patriots won over the Bulldogs by scores of 25-8, 20-25, 22-25, 25-22 and 15-12 to sweep the season series from the Bulldogs and snap a two-match losing streak.
Francis Marion was led by Kaytlin Smart and Caroline Lucas (Smithfield, Utah) with 18 kills each while Kaylee Gillespie (Pickens, S.C.) added 55 assists and 14 digs as the visitors rallied from a 2-1 deficit to score the victory.
Barton was paced by senior outside hitter
Allison Gambill (Hickory, N.C.) with 15 kills and 15 digs for her 13th double-double on the season while
Henly Sleight (Jackson, Mich.) added a dozen kills in the losing effort. The Bulldogs did finish with 21 blocks despite the setback.
Barton, the 11th seed in the 2023 Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball Championship, will take on eighth-seeded Young Harris (10-16) in the opening round on Sunday, November 12, at 1:00 p.m., in Florence, S.C., on the campus of Francis Marion University.
Francis Marion will take on the winner immediately following the match at 3:30 p.m.
