FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (0-5) let a close game get away in the third period in an 89-64 setback to Fayetteville State (4-0) Monday evening at Felton J. Capel Arena.
The Broncos' Aniylah Bryant (Havelock, N.C.) led all scorers with 23 points as the home team broke open a close contest by outscoring the Bulldogs by a 30-3 score in the third quarter. Fayetteville State held a 40-35 edge at intermission.
Barton was led by sophomore forwards
Erial Owens (Powder Springs, Ga.) and
Lauren Mingo (Clinton, Md.) with 14 points each while senior guard
Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) added 11 points but the Bulldogs hit just six-of-27 (22 points) three-point attempts and were turned over 22 times in the setback.
Bryant hit 10-of-15 attempts from the field and teammate Talia Trotter (Ellicott City, Md.) finished with 14 points and connected on six-of-seven shots in the victory for the Broncos.
The Bulldogs did score 26 points in the final stanza but the deficit was too big to overcome. Fayetteville State also held a 52-39 edge on the boards in the triumph.
Barton next travels to Aiken, S.C., to take on USC Aiken on Tuesday, November 28, at 5:30 p.m., while Fayetteville State takes on Lander in Greenwood, S.C., on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
