NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (0-2) suffered a 74-59 loss to Newberry (1-1) Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Southeast Regional Challenge at Eleazer Arena in the opening weekend of the 2023-24 season.
Newberry's Jess Tomkins (Melbourne, AUSTRALIA) and Payton Cronen (Louisville, Ky.) both scored 17 points and four players finished in double figures for the Wolves in the triumph.
The Wolves took control in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs by a 26-16 margin and shooting 71 percent (10-of-14) from the field in the final stanza for the victory.

Nyla Powell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) finished with 17 points and senior guard
Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) added 15 points and had four of the squad's 11 steals despite the setback. Barton was held to just two-of-11 (18 percent) from behind the charity stripe and were turned over 18 times. Barton did hold a 34-33 edge at intermission.
Barton looks to bounce back on Wednesday when the Bulldogs host Winston-Salem State in their season opener on Wednesday at Wilson Gymnasium beginning at 5:00 p.m., while Newberry hosts Francis Marion on Wednesday starting at 6:00 p.m.
