WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (7-6-4), the sixth seed in the 2023 Conference Carolinas Championship, downed rival and seventh-seeded Mount Olive (4-8-4), 1-0, in the First Round on Wednesday evening at chilly Truist Stadium and Electric Supply Company Field.
Barton will now travel to Young Harris, Ga., to take on third-seeded Young Harris (9-3-5) on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinal round beginning at 4:00 p.m.
The Bulldogs scored the lone goal of the match at the 57:34 mark of the second half when graduate student forward
Luis Weber (Stuttgart, GERMANY) found the right corner of the net after taking a pass in the box from senior midfielder
Gio Vences (Sanford, N.C.), who was credited with the assist.
The goal was Weber's fourth of the year. Barton held a 16-10 edge in shots taken while sophomore goalkeeper
Steingrimur Gunnarsson (Grenivik, ICELAND) picked up his fourth shutout of the year. Gunnarsson stopped four shots on the evening.
Mount Olive's Axel Engren (Sundsvall, SWEDEN) suffered the loss in goal despite allowing just one goal to go along with five saves.
