Barton Football to move to Conference Carolinas in 2025 with the reestablishment of league-sponsored sport

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Barton College will move to Conference Carolinas in 2025 in football as the league reestablishes the sponsorship of the sport for the first time since the 1974-75 academic year in 2025-26.

Currently, the Bulldogs are an Associate Member of the South Atlantic Conference and are in the midst of a three-year deal with league.

The conference in 2025 will initially consist of six schools:  Barton, Chowan, Erskine, North Greenville, UNC Pembroke and Shorter.  Shorter, out of Rome, Ga., officially became the 15th member of Conference Carolinas today as well.

"This is a huge announcement for Conference Carolinas," said Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin. "It has been a priority for us to find a way to bring football back to Conference Carolinas, and the addition of Shorter allows us to align with our member institutions to sponsor the sport.

"We have a great deal of work ahead of the 2025 season, but all of us in Conference Carolinas could not be any more excited. We look forward to working with all of our member institutions as Conference Carolinas football grows and thrives in the years to come."

Barton is an original member of Conference Carolinas and will now have all 24 sports sponsored by the league.  The sport of  Acrobatics and Tumbling is scheduled to begin competition for the Bulldogs starting next year.

"Conference Carolinas has a long history of excellence," said Barton Interim Director of Athletics Britney Woodhull-Smith.  "As a founding member, Barton College is grateful for the opportunity to develop our football program with the conference and to continue to progress into champions of body, mind and soul."

"We are looking forward to competing in the inaugural year of Conference Carolinas Football," said Barton Head Football Coach Chip Hester.  "We will tackle this new challenge with the same determined mindset that our team has shown since the inception of this program several years ago."
