Barton baseball drops a pair in the league tournament to end 2022 season

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (26-26) saw its 2022 season conclude with setbacks to Mount Olive (12-10) and No. 19 UNC Pembroke (14-5) Saturday afternoon at historic Fleming Stadium in the 2022 Conference Carolinas Championship.

Mount Olive 12, Barton 10
Mount Olive's Jack Casbarro (Mount Olive, N.C.) hit three home runs including the game-winning round-tripper in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Trojans rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat the Bulldogs.  Casbarro finished with five runs batted in as well.

Barton sophomore designated hitter Tanner Halvorson (Eau Claire, Wis.) hit a grand slam in the first inning and finished with five runs batted in while senior second baseman Dylan Scaranda (Galloway, N.J.) totaled four runs scored, three hits and two RBI despite the setback.

Mount Olive's Seth Nightingdale (Finksburg, Md.) (2-1) earned the win in relief while Justin Koehler (Trinity, Fla.) picked up his fourth save of the season after pitching two scoreless innings.  Barton senior Michael Yuille (Boyds, Md.) fell to 4-5 after being tagged with the loss.

No. 19 UNC Pembroke 14, Barton 5
The Braves, holding a 2-1 advantage after two innings of play, broke the contest open with a five-run third inning as UNC Pembroke avenged a set to Barton on Friday.

The Braves' Gage Hammonds (Chadbourn, N.C.) hit a solo home run and finished with five hits and four runs scored while Spencer Faulkner (Rolesville, N.C.) added four hits and four runs scored as UNC Pembroke avoided elimination.  UNC Pembroke's Evan McLean (Greenville, N.C.) improved to 8-1 on the year after earning the victory while Chase Jernigan (Fayetteville, N.C.) was credited with the save.

Barton was led by senior shortstop Andres Machado (Coral Springs, Fla.) led the Bulldogs with three hits and an RBI while senior Alex Hart (Raleigh, N.C.) fell to 9-4 after taking the loss.  Hart's two strikeouts, however, helped him tie the school career record for 274 with Dylan Ward (2016-19).
