Barton women’s lacrosse ends season with setback to Belmont Abbey in league tournament semifinals

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (10-8) saw its 2022 season come to an end with a 17-5 setback to Belmont Abbey (11-7) Thursday afternoon in the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas Championship at Pepsi Stadium on the campus of North Greenville University.

The Crusaders, the second seed in the tournament, will take on top-seeded Mount Olive (13-5) in the finals Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.  The Trojans defeated fourth-seeded North Greenville (9-10) in their semifinal contest today.  Barton was the third seed in the tournament.

Belmont Abbey's Emma Pherson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and MacKenzie Kaderabek (Annapolis, Md.) both scored four goals for the Crusaders, who spotted the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage early in the first quarter before reeling off 12 straight scores to take control of the contest.

Barton freshman midfielder Kate Matuza (Hampstead, N.C.) scored three times in the losing effort.  Belmont Abbey, which held a 31-24 advantage in shots taken, defeated Barton for the second time this season.  Matuza finished the season with a team-high 68 points.

In goal, the Crusaders' Michelle Guppy (Hebron, Conn.) earned the win after playing the first half and making seven saves while freshman Olivia LaValle (Peabody, Mass.) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs despite five saves.
