WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (28-10, 15-8) split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with Southern Wesleyan (9-28, 8-16) Saturday on Senior Day at Jeffries Field. The Warriors prevailed in the first contest, 4-1, while the Bulldogs won the nightcap by an 8-4 score to split the doubleheader.
Game One – Southern Wesleyan 4, Barton 1
The Warriors' Sarah Prater (Dallas, Ga.) gave the visitors all the offense they needed with a grand slam in the third inning while Emma Collins (Easley, S.C.) (6-10) allowed just one unearned run in the complete game victory. Collins struck out seven batters in the win for Southern Wesleyan.
Barton's lone run of the contest came thanks to an RBI double by senior outfielder
Mary B. Dixon (Washington, N.C.) in the fourth inning. Sophomore
Rilee Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) fell to 8-7 after suffering the loss for the home team.
Game Two – Barton 8, Southern Wesleyan 4
The Bulldogs jumped on the Warriors early with a six-run first inning to give Barton just enough cushion to salvage the split. Barton junior first baseman
Sloane Correa (Greenville, N.C.) highlighted the frame with a two-run single.
Barton scored its final four runs on wild pitches while freshman
Miranda Holmes (Godwin, N.C.) improved to 12-2 on the season with the victory on the mound. Holmes allowed just one earned run to go along with 10 strikeouts.
For Southern Wesleyan, Delaney Byers (Lecanto, Fla.) hit a two-run double in the losing effort. Emma Jo Wolfe (South Hill, Va.) (1-1) was tagged with the loss.
Barton will next compete in the 2022 Conference Carolinas Softball Championship which begins on Thursday, April 28, at Tyger River Park in Duncan, S.C.
