DUNCAN, S.C. – The Barton softball team (28-11) opened the 2022 Conference Carolinas Championship with an 8-3 loss to Emmanuel (36-20) Thursday afternoon at Tyger River Park. The Bulldogs are the third seed in the tournament while the Lions are seeded sixth.
Emmanuel advances to take on the winner of second-seeded Mount Olive and seventh-seeded UNC Pembroke Friday at Noon while Barton will face the loser on Friday at 2:00 p.m., in an elimination game.
The Lions' Kya Santiago (Homer, Ga.) had a pair of hits and three runs batted in highlighted by the game-winning run-scoring double in a three-run fourth inning.
Holding a 4-2 advantage entering the seventh frame, the Lions put the contest away with a four-run inning which included a two-run single from Santiago.
Barton was led by sophomore outfielder
Kandyce Condrey (High Point, N.C.) with a pair of runs batted in while junior
AnnaKate Gilchrist (Clayton, N.C.) (4-1) suffered the loss. For Emmanuel, Dani Fairey (Covington, Ga.) (9-7) earned the win while Maddie Edwards (Lakeland, Fla.) pitched the final three innings for her third save of the season.
