WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (27-9, 14-7) swept a Conference Carolinas doubleheader from North Greenville (19-27, 11-11), 7-0 and 3-2, Friday afternoon at Jeffries Field.
Game One – Barton 7, North Greenville 0
Barton sophomore
Rilee Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) improved to 8-6 on the season after throwing her third shutout of the year to lead the Bulldogs. Jones scattered seven hits and struck out two batters in the victory.
Barton junior third baseman
Lindsey Massengill (Pine Level, N.C.) finished with three hits and two runs batted in and the Bulldogs broke the contest open with a four-run third inning. Massengill opened the scoring in the first inning with the game-winning RBI single. The Crusaders' Bailey Pace (Cheraw, S.C.) fell to 10-12 on the year after suffering the loss.
Game Two – Barton 3, North Greenville 2
Barton junior designated player
Sloane Correa (Greenville, N.C.) hit the game-winning, two-run double in the third inning while senior catcher
McCrae Knapp (Hertford, N.C.) also drove in a run in the frame as the Bulldogs held on to complete the sweep of the Crusaders.
North Greenville added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, with Claire Gilmore (Pinopolis, S.C.) and Kaley Goerlich (Elgin, S.C.) each driving in one in the losing effort.
Barton freshman
Miranda Holmes (Godwin, N.C.) improved to 11-2 after pitching into the sixth inning while allowing just one earned run with seven strikeouts. Junior
AnnaKate Gilchrist (Clayton, N.C.) registered the final out for her third save of the year for the Bulldogs. North Greenville's Hailey Wells (Spartanburg, S.C.) (5-10) was tagged with the loss.
Barton hosts Southern Wesleyan in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader for Senior Day Saturday beginning at Noon while North Greenville takes on Chowan at home on Saturday in a league doubleheader at Noon as well.
