Barton baseball holds on for 7-6 win over Erskine to salvage league weekend series

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Barton baseball team (13-9, 8-4) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-6 victory over Erskine (13-11, 5-7) Saturday afternoon at Grier Field to avoid a weekend Conference Carolinas sweep.

The Bulldogs scored all seven of their runs in the top of the fourth inning and held on in the end to defeat the Flying Fleet.  Barton sophomore Tanner Halvorson (Eau Claire, Wis.) (1-1) pitched the final five and two-third innings to earn the win.  Halvorson allowed just one run while striking out four batters.

Barton's seven-run fourth frame was highlighted by sophomore outfielder Carelle Gonzalez's (Bridgeton, N.J.) two-run single and sophomore outfielder Raymond Paniagua's (Blue Springs, Mo.) run-scoring triple.  Paniagua finished with two of the Bulldogs' eight hits.

Erskine was led by Cal Bocchino (Delray, Fla.) with three hits and three runs batted in while Connor Harrison (Canyon County, Calif.) fell to 0-2 after suffering the loss.

Barton returns home to take on No. 11 Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., while Erskine faces Wingate on the road on Tuesday in Wingate, N.C.
