WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's lacrosse team (0-1) opened the 2022 season with an 18-7 setback to No. 3 Wingate (1-0) Saturday afternoon at Truist Stadium and Electric Supply Company Field.
Wingate, who reached the national semifinals last season, had three players score four goals in the win: Adam Vodovnik (Bloomington, Minn.), Bobby Padden (Cary, N.C.) and Willie Grieco (Lawrenceville, Ga.). Both Padden and Grieco were NCAA Division II Preseason First-Team All-Americans.
The visitors held a 10-7 advantage early in the third period but scored the final eight goals of the contest. Wingate held advantages in both shots taken (47-27) and forced Barton into 20 turnovers. However, the Bulldogs held the edge in ground balls by a 37-28 count.
Barton was led by sophomore attacker
Mason Chaney (Dunkirk, Md.) with three goals while sophomore attacker
Matt Calleri (Holly Springs, N.C.) scored twice as the home team kept Wingate at bay until just after halftime.
Wingate goalkeeper K.C. Carlson (Oceanside, N.Y.) earned the win after playing the first half and earning three saves while senior goalkeeper
Trevor Witholt (Murrieta, Calif.) suffered the loss despite stopping 11 shots for Barton.
Barton remains at home to take on Young Harris next Saturday, February 12, at 1:00 p.m., at Truist Stadium while Wingate hosts Mercyhurst next Saturday beginning at Noon.
