SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Barton men's basketball team (12-12, 10-10) ran its winning streak to three games with an 80-72 win over Converse (5-21, 4-16) Monday evening in a Conference Carolinas game at Hannah Gymnasium.
Barton sophomore forward
Trevon Spencer (Columbia, N.C.), who was named league defensive player of the week earlier in the day, led all scorers with 22 points as the Bulldogs shot 54 percent (32-of-59) from the floor and defeated the Valkyries for the second time in four days. Barton downed Converse on Friday, February 11, by a 75-67 score at Wilson Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs also received 18 and 16 points, respectively, from sophomore guard
Donaven Hairston (Atlanta, Ga.) and redshirt freshman guard
Marcus Boykin (Clinton, N.C.).
Trailing by a score of 70-68 with five minutes remaining in the contest, Barton reeled off eight straight points to take the lead for good including the game-winning layup from Boykin.
The Valkyries were led by Jimmie Sanders, III (Dallas, Texas) with 14 points and the team totaled 11 three-pointers on the evening despite suffering their 12th straight loss.
Barton returns to the court on Wednesday when the Bulldogs travel to Florence, S.C., to take on Francis Marion Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., while Converse faces Erskine in Due West, S.C., Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
