PETERSBURG, Va. – The Barton women's basketball team (2-9) suffered a 68-62 setback to Virginia State (6-6) Saturday afternoon on New Year's Eve at the Multipurpose Center.
The Trojans' Trinity Moody (New Haven, Conn.) led the home team with 18 points and was one of three Virginia State players to score in double figures in the victory. Moody connected on nine-of-12 free throw attempts as the Trojans won their second straight game.
Barton fell despite the performance of junior guard
Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.), who led all scorers with a career-high 32 points on 12-of-22 shooting including six treys. Redshirt freshman guard
Skylar Quillet (Garner, N.C.) also scored in double figures for the Bulldogs, totaling 10 points on the day.
Trailing by a 59-58 score with just under four minutes left, Virginia State scored the next eight points to put the contest away. Sommer Blackmore (Apple Valley, Minn.), who finished with 17 points, hit the game-winning free throws for Virginia State which broke a 59-all tie.
Barton steps back into Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday, January 4, to take Emmanuel in Franklin Springs, Ga., beginning at 2:00 p.m., while Virginia State hosts Winston-Salem State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
