BELMONT, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (16-1, 12-1) made it 10 victories in a row with a 68-67 win over Belmont Abbey (10-6, 8-4) Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler Center in a Conference Carolinas contest.
The Bulldogs, ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division II, was led by an 18-point, 15-rebound performance from senior forward
Jami Tham (Arlington, Va.) and exacted a bit of revenge on the Crusaders. Tham also hit the game-winning shot with 63 seconds left in the contest. Neither team was able to score the rest of the way.
Belmont Abbey handed Barton its lone defeat in December and was the only team to beat the Bulldogs – three times – during the abbreviated 2020-21 campaign.
Barton was able to hold on to defeat Belmont Abbey after taking a 36-22 advantage at halftime. The Crusaders rallied to take a 67-66 lead on a three-pointer by Jo Snow (Mount Airy, N.C.) at the 1:17 mark of the second half but Tham and the Bulldogs were able to respond for the win. Snow finished with a game-high 29 points and six three-pointers while Brittany Autry (Mineral Springs, N.C.) added 20 points despite the loss.
Four players scored in double figures total for the Bulldogs including 17 points from senior guard
Akira Wiggins (Knightdale, N.C.). Wiggins added five assists as well.
Barton returns home to take on King (Tenn.) on Wednesday, February 2, at 5:00 p.m., at Wilson Gymnasium while Belmont Abbey takes on Southern Wesleyan Monday at 5:00 p.m., in Central, S.C.
