WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (14-1, 10-1) pushed its winning streak to eight games with a convincing 68-28 victory over Erskine (0-15, 0-13) in a Conference Carolinas game Monday evening at Wilson Gymnasium. Barton is ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division II.
A total of 15 players scored for the Bulldogs including a game-high 12 points from senior forward
Jami Tham (Arlington, Va.) in the win. Senior center and All-American
Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 10 points for Barton, who beat Erskine for the second time in four days.
The Bulldogs' defense was outstanding, holding the Flying Fleet to just one point in the third quarter and two points in the third stanza as a close contest early on turned into a rout.
Barton also limited Erskine to just 26 percent shooting (12-of-46) for the game and forced the Flying Fleet into 27 turnovers which led to 33 points for the home team. The Bulldogs also remained in sole possession of second place in the league regular season standings. Erskine, still searching for its first win of the year, was led by Carmen Chandler (Anderson, S.C.) with seven points and seven rebounds.
Barton turns right around and takes on undefeated and rival Mount Olive in a Conference Carolinas showdown Wednesday at Wilson Gymnasium beginning at 5:00 p.m., while Erskine travels to Bristol, Tenn., to take on King Wednesday beginning at 5:00 p.m., in league action.
