Barton women’s lacrosse advances in the league championship after downing Chowan, 18-8

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (7-2) opened the 2021 Conference Carolinas Championship with an 18-8 victory over Chowan (2-7) Tuesday afternoon at the Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium.

The Bulldogs are the third seed in the tournament while the Hawks were seeded sixth.  Barton will now take on second-seeded Belmont Abbey (10-3) in the semifinals on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Pepsi Stadium on the campus of North Greenville University in Tigerville, S.C.

Barton sophomore midfielder Samantha Diaz (Apex, N.C.) and freshman midfielder Sydney Quinn (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) both scored four goals as the Bulldogs found the back of the net seven straight times to take control after spotting the visitors a 5-4 advantage at the 10:23 mark of the first half.

Barton junior defender Ashley Teilborg (Sneads Ferry, N.C.) added three goals as the Bulldogs were dominant throughout the majority of the match after holding sizeable advantages in both shots taken (51-10) and ground balls (43-16).  Barton senior defender Rebecca Fraser (Chesapeake, Va.) was a force on defense with 12 ground balls as Barton defeated Chowan for the second time this year.

For the Hawks, Brooke Woods-Pennell (Bowmanville, Ohio) scored three times but Mallory Dunker (Pasadena, Md.) stopped 16 shots in goal despite the setback.  Barton junior goalkeeper Felicity Borge (Frederick, Md.) made a pair of saves and earned the win in her first start of the season.
