WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College softball team (1-1) opened the 2021 season with a doubleheader sweep at home to Wingate (1-1) Thursday afternoon at Jeffries Field. Barton won the first game, 3-1, while Wingate salvaged the split with an 8-0 victory in the second contest.
Game One – Barton 3, Wingate 1

Rilee Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) (1-0) earned the complete game victory and the home team scored all three of its runs in the fourth frame. Jones allowed just one run while scattering four hits and striking out four batters while sophomore pinch hitter
Sloane Correa (Greenville, N.C.) hit the game-winning, run-scoring double in the win.
For Wingate, Hannah Reeves (Reevesville, S.C.) hit an RBI single but Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) (0-1) was tagged with the loss. Sophomore
Lindsey Massengill (Pine Level, N.C.) had a pair of hits for Barton.
Game Two – Wingate 8, Barton 0 (five innings)
Wingate's Haley Cashwell (Autryville, N.C.) had a bases-clearing triple in a five-run fourth inning and Sydney Kale (Shelby, N.C.) (1-0) threw a three-hit shutout as the visitors run-ruled the home squad. Kale struck out eight batters as well. Barton sophomore
AnnaKate Gilchrist (Clayton, N.C.) (0-1) suffered the loss.
Barton next hosts William Peace on Saturday, February 13, at Noon in a doubleheader at Jeffries Field while Wingate faces Augusta in a doubleheader in Augusta, Ga., on Wednesday, February 10, starting at 1:00 p.m.
