HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (1-0) opened the 2021 campaign in rousing fashion with a 19-7 win over Coker (0-1) Wednesday afternoon at the Cobras Athletic Field.
Four players for the Bulldogs – freshman midfielder
Jayden Smith (Winter Garden, Fla.), senior midfielders
Kayli Ashenfelter (Stewartstown, Pa.) and
Morgan McGuffin (Huntingtown, Md.) and senior attacker
Angelina Scarpa (Hicksville, N.Y.) – all scored four goals each in the dominant victory.
Barton rolled to a 13-3 halftime lead and never looked back. The Bulldogs held sizeable advantages in both shots taken (39-13) and ground balls (24-17) while senior goalkeeper
Katherine Mattena (Salt Lake City, Utah) earned the win.
For Coker, Hannah Shuren (East Patchogue, N.Y.) and Alyssa Baronella-O'Toole (Severn, Md.) both scored twice for the home team while Olivia Fladung (Little Mountain, S.C.) suffered the loss despite 12 saves on the day.
Barton hosts Erskine in its 2021 home opener at Electric Supply Company Field at Truist Stadium on Saturday afternoon beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Coker plays on the road at St. Andrews on Friday starting at 3:00 p.m., in Laurinburg, N.C.
