WINGATE, N.C. – The Barton men's lacrosse team (1-1) was dealt a 20-3 loss to Wingate (1-0) Saturday afternoon at Graham Gill Field. Wingate is ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division II.
Wingate was led by Adam Vodovnik (Bloomington, Minn.) with six goals to go along with two assists while Danny Riley (Smithtown, N.Y.) added three scores for the Bulldogs, who are coming off three consecutive South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championships.
Wingate scored the first five goals of the match and never looked back. The home team held sizeable advantages in both shots taken (64-18) and ground balls (38-26) in winning its 2021 debut.
Barton was led by senior midfielder
Bodin Nichols (Brainerd, Minn.) with a pair of goals but junior
Trevor Witholt (Murrieta, Calif.) suffered the loss despite stopping 20 shots on the day for the visitors. Wingate's goalkeeper, Edward Erickson (Portland, Ore.), earned the win after making five saves.
Barton returns to the field on Tuesday, March 1, when the Bulldogs hosts Lander at 7:00 p.m., at Truist Stadium and Electric Supply Company Field while Wingate hosts Montevallo on Saturday, February 20, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
